FEEDBACK TO:

Urban Environmental Geography – HW05                    Due Feb 3, Wednesday.

I hope the lab book system works for you.

Part B. Workbook -  Encounter Geosystems Chapters 2 and 3.   _____ of 10.

Terrific… but are you spending too much time on this? Don’t be compulsive. What matters is the tie to urban systems

Complete = about 85% done or more

Almost = looks like some struggles but you’re doing fine. Big concepts explored.

Troubles = are you having difficulties? Think about coming to before or after-class coaching on Wednesdays or office hours on Thursday.

Part C. Application to your urban setting. Critical thinking about two of the following:

Net Radiation, Solar Altitude and Declination, Albedo, Outgoing Longwave Energy, Potential for Solar Power, Global Temperature Ranges

First of the two:  ____ of 10

Presentation of evidence… your urban setting’s characteristics

Terrific – information presented … quantitative … qualitative … clear

Very good – applied lab to your urban setting

Just fine – important info presented

Not quite – info is insufficient for drawing conclusions.

Troubles – looks like you got stuck or didn’t understand the concept

Application of Earth systems thoughts – recognition of webs of relationships

Connections of the phenomenon to your settings setting… geo hydro atmo bio anthro

Terrific – clear evidence that you’re mentally marching though the checklist and thinking Earth systems thoughts… however wild.

Very good – recognize a couple important relationships

Just fine – words such as atmosphere used or science concept defined

Not quite – the concept of Earth systems was not evident

Critical thinking and analysis – discussion of consequences. Consequences can be physical… it’s hotter or colder; many can be quality of life issues – need for heating or cooling; most will affect the metabolism of the city… import of energy and export of wastes such as air pollution; some will be social such as inadequate housing, challenges of adequate food, impacts on social institutions…

Terrific – discussion links physical and human geographies. Specific. Clear. Science based with evidence of understanding of urban setting

Just fine – discussion of a full paragraph… preferably two … hopefully with a topic sentence that states your main thought supported by two or three sentences that expand on your lead sentence.

Not quite or troubles – the impact of the physical phenomenon or process on your city is not clear… perhaps because you haven’t written enough to show your understanding… or perhaps because what you’ve written is so general it does not portray the connections.

REMINDERS…

Each of these labs counts 2% of  your grade… so they have value but are not so important to go compulsive over. They’re meant to coach you to succeed on exams… and life.

Don’t forget the Big Picture… The goals of GEOG3330-Urban Environmental Geography are:

·        That you are empowered by knowledge to go through life seeing understanding and appreciating the web of relationships among the subsystems of Earth systems… geo hydro atmo bio anthro.

·        And… GEOG3330 is a general education science explorations course

Keep those two objectives in mind… and you’ll do fine
