Two parts to your homework:

PART A. 10 points -- Complete Encounter Geosystems Chapters 10 - 14.

5 minute rule: work on a question 5 minutes, max. At 5 min… write “5 min” as an answer… and quit working on that question. 5 minutes means you’ve thought about it… but not spent egregious amounts of time on it. You still should be completing about 85% of the labs.

REMEMBER… one of the purposes of the course is to EXPLORE physical and biological sciences… so explore. Don’t get so focused or overwhelmed by the labs that you can’t think about Earth systems … how everything affects everything.

PART B. 20 points.... this part is much more important.

Apply Earth systems concepts to your urban setting. Critical thinking. GEOMORPHIC PROCESSES

(1) Think Earth systems thoughts...

Think Earth systems thoughts... meaning... go through a mental checklist. Think about relationships.

• How do processes of weathering, erosion, transport, and deposition affect the atmospheric conditions of my city (weather and climate)? HINT… two sets of processes result in Earth’s landforms (1) tectonics sets the stage, and (2) processes of sedimentation (weathering, erosion, transport, and deposition of sediments) shape landforms. Every valley is the product of weathering, erosion, transport, and deposition.

• How do “geomorphic processes” (shorthand for all the processes that result in landforms) affect the hydrosphere relationships of my city (water supplies, water issues)?

• How do geomorphic processes affect the biosphere of my city (directly its flora and fauna, and its "footprint" its agricultural dependencies)?

• How do geomorphic processes affect the geosphere relationships (tectonics, erosion / deposition... directly or indirectly)?

• How do geomorphic processes affect the anthrosphere of my city (for example, physical layout; transportation and connectedness; society and quality of life; economics and the metabolism of the city (what it consumes, and produces, including wastes))?

(2) Write a paragraph (maximum of two) that explain(s) how past and present geomorphic processes affect your urban setting.
